Mara watched Vikk and CeCe talk with their eyes. More likely, they were communicating through some other means. Either way, the stalled silence was deafening. She witnessed the jockeying back and forth, except nothing audible came out of their mouths.

“Can you please have your discussion where I can understand it?” Mara asked. She didn’t care if she sounded snappish. “Earth thinks I’m missing. My ex-husband is ruining my reputation, and the two of you are having some cute conversation in your heads. Frankly, I find it insulting.”

CeCe had the grace to look admonished, her glittery cerulean cheeks taking on a darker glow.

“Sorry, Mara,” Vikk said. He sat beside her, placing his hand on her thigh. “I meant to tell you about the time differential—for us it’s nothing more than an interesting tidbit, like trivia. It never occurred to me that it would factor into something this serious. What CeCe said is correct. Earth days advance quicker than Vraithe. Our rotation is slower. So, for each day on Vraithe, two-and-a-half days pass on Earth.”

CeCe’s eyebrows went up. It appeared she had an idea. “When you go back, just tell Enemy-General Calix that you’ve been visiting family. It’s not like it’s unusual to visit family at Christmas, right? I mean, we don’t celebrate Christmas, why would we, but how crazy could it be that you’re not home?”

“I’m an only child, CeCe,” Mara said, “and both of my parents are dead. Calix knows I have no family to visit. Other than an occasional trip to see Command Sergeant Major Hannah Atholms, a good friend of mine who is still active-duty army, Finley and I don’t do much traveling. She gets sick on long car rides, and you can forget plane flights. The drive from Baltimore to Massachusetts is usually a seven-hour drive—it takes us three days. If Calix was planning to pick her up on Monday, that means his wedding is on Friday or Saturday. He wouldn’t want Finley to get sick in his car, so he would have built in enough time to pick her up and drive back to Baltimore.”
